How to choose a gumball machine

A gumball machine is a fun gift and a proper little conversation piece, but there is more choice than you might expect. This guide walks through the types, sizes, how they work and which one suits you, so you end up with the right machine first time.

The main types of gumball machine

There are four broad styles to choose from.

Tabletop metal machines are the classic retro look, with a metal body, a glass style globe and a crank on the front. They sit on a desk, shelf or counter, take coins, and double as a money box. See our tabletop gumball machines.

Spiral machines send each gumball winding down a clear track before it drops, which children love to watch. The small 10 inch spiral is a tabletop size, while the larger twister machines make a real feature of the drop.

Large freestanding machines stand two to three feet tall and are a showpiece for a shop, office or event. They come with gumballs included and command attention. See our large gumball machines.

Wall mounted machines save your counter space and fix to the wall, which suits a playroom or a small kitchen. See the wall mounted gumball machine.

What size should you get?

Size is mostly about where it will live and the impression you want to make. A 9 to 11 inch machine is perfect for a desk, a child's bedroom or a gift. A 15 inch machine is a step up in presence for a counter or shop. The 22, 24 and 36 inch machines are freestanding statement pieces for shops, offices and events. If in doubt, our 11 inch metal machine is the most popular all rounder.

Coin operated or free vend?

Our metal machines take British 1p to 20p coins, so they work as a fun money box that encourages children to save. They can also be set to dispense without coins if you would rather just enjoy the gumballs, and the instructions show you how. The larger machines run on British standard coins, and the plastic twister machines need no coins at all.

Do they come with gumballs, and what refills fit?

It varies by machine. The mini machine and the large freestanding machines arrive already filled, while the tabletop metal machines are sold without gumballs so you can choose your own. Either way, you top them up with our 1kg gumball refills. Our gumballs measure about 12mm, which suits most of our machines, and the metal machines take sweets up to 16mm, so you can mix in other treats too. Always check the machine's instructions for the sizes it accepts, as the taller spiral machines can be fussier.

Which one is right for you?

For a gift or a first machine, start with the mini machine or a 9 to 11 inch metal machine. For a home centrepiece, the 15 inch metal machine or a spiral machine is a lovely middle step. For a shop, office or event, go large with the 24 or 36 inch machines. Whatever you choose, keep a refill pack handy so the fun never runs out. Enjoy free UK delivery on any order over £20.
